DIY Car Seat Diaper Clutch - A Tutorial

Diaper Clutch (21)

I remember when I had my last two babies, I never felt like I had enough hands. Trying to juggle toddlers, the baby, the diaper bag and a purse is a nightmare. I always thought there should be some kind of attachment to the car seat carrier that could hold a few diapers. I mean really, when you're running into the store for a few gallons of milk who wants to lug the diaper bag. But we all do since we know that the one time we're not prepared there will be a blowout.

When I made my sister-in-law her car seat cover, I decided to make her a little diaper clutch that can attach to the handle of the car seat. That way she can always have a  few diapers when she needs them.

Introducing the Hands Free Diaper Clutch!

Diaper Clutch (15)

 Want to make your own car seat diaper clutch?

Here's how:
Cut list:
Inside: 23" X 9 1/4"
Outside pieces{cut one of each size out of different colors}:
4" X 9 1/4"
3 1/2" X 9 1/4"
15" X 9 1/4"
 1 1/2" X 9 1/4"
Straps:
Cut 2 - 2 3/4" X 9 1/2"

Strap pieces are not shown and I'm also missing the 1 1/2" piece. {Sometimes my brain doesn't work properly when the kids are running wild all around me}

On your two large pieces that will make up the top of the clutch you will want to make an angled cut. I placed the fabric on my cutting board, and placed a straight edge on both 3" marks. Then cut.

With right sides together, sew the pieces together. This is the order I went in.

Then press your seams flat. Your iron is your best friend when you're sewing. Use it! It will make your project turn out so much better. I use my iron ten times more for sewing than I ever do for wrinkly clothes. {Not sure what that says about me}

Next I sewed on some ribbon. Sew close to both ends of the ribbon. I placed it about an inch from the top edge of the grey.

With right sides together, sew all the way around the bag leaving an opening at the bottom for turning.

Turn the bag inside out and press. Press the opening flat. Then top stitch across the whole length where the opening is.

Now make your straps to attach the clutch to your carseat.  Fold over the strips lengthwise and sew with right sides together.

Now turn right side out  and press folding the ends under as you press.

Then top stitch all the way around. {I know this is not the same fabric, I forgot pictures, but you do the same thing as with the car seat cover straps}

Now sew on your velcro. I used 2 inch pieces. Make sure you do one on each side so it will attach when wrapped around the car seat handle. Sew the strips in place. I sewed a small square {where the black dotted box is} in the center of the strip to attach it to the back.

Next fold over your diaper clutch. There should be about an inch from your angled cut.
Now sew all the way around very close to the edge {where the black lines are shown.}

Now add your velcro as shown.

Next tie a bow with the ribbon and sew it in place on the front flap.

Here it is attached to the car seat.

Here's the Car Seat Cover with the diaper clutch.

I totally wish I would have had one of these when my kids were babies!
