Crocheted Winter Hat

Do you have a hard time making things for yourself? I do. I'm always making things for my kids, and for the house, but I rarely make things just for me. Do you know how many years I've gone without a winter hat? I don't either, it's been too long. At least my coat has a hood when I need it.

I've been wanting to make this hat for two years now, and I finally did it. Now two months later I'm finally sharing it with you!

I ended up making two of these hats, because the first one was huge! If any of you have an extremely large head, I'd be happy to mail it to you ;)

The hat on the top is my first attempt.
I found the pattern at Simple Beans. She took a pattern from here and changed the bottom part. To adjust the pattern to fit my head, I simply started out with fewer stitches. I'll try to explain it a little better.

Here are the first two lines of the pattern:

With CA,ch 5,join with sl st to first ch to form ring.
Rnd 1:Ch 2(counts as a dc),11 dc in ring.Join with sl st to top of ch-2(12 dc).

Basically on round 1, I chained two, but then double crocheted 9 instead of 11. Then I proceeded to follow the pattern. Your number of stitches in each round will not match the pattern, but other than that it was still easy to follow. I used an I hook

This was a fairly easy pattern - I did have to look up how to do FPDC. Honestly, I don't think I'd be able to do much crocheting without the internet. Each winter I have to refresh my memory on how to do the stitches.

I'm glad I took the time to make myself a little something.

  2. Super cute tuque! I might just try making one for myself! I was always have the hardest trouble finding a cute hat in the color I like to fit my tiny head; seriously smaller than a child's! I figured I might as well put my new crocheting skills to useful work! Thanks for sharing!
