Four patches can be any size, and can be used alone as a block or as part of the pattern of a larger piece.
Today I'll share how to create multiple four patches at a time from strips of fabric. It's much quicker than cutting out all of the little squares individually.

HOW TO MAKE A FOUR PATCH FROM STRIPS
The four patches will help make up our 12 inch Jacob's Ladder quilt block. We start out with 2 1/2 inch strips, and will end up with a five 4 1/2 inch four patch blocks. Once the four patches are sewn into the bigger block the end size of the four patches will be 4 inches.Adjust sizes as needed for your project.
Cut two pieces of fabric that are 2 1/2" by 30" long.
With right sides together, sew the strips together along the long end with a 1/4 inch seam allowance.
Press open, with seams toward the darker color.
Cut the strip in half. You will now have two strips that are 15 inches long.
Next, place one strip facing up. Place the other strip face down with the opposite colors on top of each other like shown above.
Next cut the strips into 2 1/2 inch pieces.
Now sew together each pair along one side with a 1/4 inch seam allowance.
Press open the squares and voila, you have a four patch square. Square them up to 4 1/2 inches square.
Now they're ready to add to our larger quilt block.
