Mod Podge Wooden Music Notes Decor

Are you a music lover? Or do you know someone who is? My mom is a HUGE music lover. She has played the piano her whole life. As a kid, I always remember her practicing. I'm not sure she's ever missed a day.

She has always been the organist at church since I was a little kid. She now has an organ in her home that she plays all the time. So I made her some music notes with her favorite music to hang on her wall.

This is a fairly simple project. With a jigsaw, wood and some basic supplies you'll have these whipped out in no time.

How to Make Wooden Music Notes

Tools and Supplies:
  • backerboard
  • jigsaw
  • sand paper
  • black cardstock
  • black paint
  • foam brushes
  • razor blade
  • sheet music
  • Mod Podge
  • sawtooth hangers
  • E6000 glue or hot glue

First print off the templates. You can find them here.  Cut them out. I used the eighth note for the quarter note as well.

Trace them onto a board. I used some leftover backer board from the bookshelf I made. Don't throw away the templates yet, you will need them again later.

Next cut them out with a jig saw or a band saw.  Do you see those jagged edges? Now it's time to sand them down.

Now it's time to paint. I just painted the edges of the boards.

Now to adhere the sheet music. {I found free printable sheet music here. You can find tons of free classical sheet music online - just google it.}

I have found that the best way to Mod Podge is to coat both the paper and the wood with Mod Podge. That way when you stick them together, it will slide just enough for you to smooth out the bubbles.

I used the whole sheet of paper, smoothed it out good, and after it dried a bit, then I took a razor blade and cut off the excess.

For this one, I needed two sheets of paper. I made sure that it lined up before gluing it down.

Next I added a little paint to the edges. You can see on the left I haven't added the paint yet, but the right I have. I just added a tiny bit of paint to the a foam brush and rubbed it on the edges.
Using the black cardstock, cut out the inside pieces of your treble clef and eighth notes. I'm fairly competent with the jigsaw, but those pieces were too small to try to cut out of the wood.

Mod Podge them in place and add a coat or two of Mod Podge over the whole thing.

Then I added Sawtooth hangers on the back for hanging. Because the wood was so thin, I used E6000 glue to attach them. I'm sure hot glue would work as well.

There you have it. Now go hang them, or wrap them up to give to your favorite music lover.
