Chocolate pudding cake is a decadent dessert that has long been a favorite of mine. As a child, I remember having on Sunday evenings.
This old-fashioned pudding cake is reminiscent of a time when the typical home cook had no fancy tools or ingredients at their disposal. They took basic everyday ingredients and made some dang good food.
The cake is sometimes called hot fudge sundae cake, or hot fudge pudding cake, with good reason.
As the cake bakes, it creates hot fudge sauce.
A serving of this pudding cake pairs perfectly with a scoop of ice cream.
It's really magic how it all comes together.
You mix up the batter and pour it in a pan, then sprinkle it with a cocoa and brown sugar mixture. Then pour hot water on top.
As it bakes the layers flip-flop.
The liquid sinks to the bottom to create a delectable hot fudge sauce and the cake floats to the top.
The in-between part becomes an ooey gooey puddingy bite of mouthwatering deliciousness.
It's perfection for chocolate lovers!
CHOCOLATE PUDDING CAKE (HOT FUDGE CAKE)
Chocolate pudding cake is a combination of cake, pudding and hot fudge sauce. What's not to like?!If you love lava cake, this is kind of like a family-sized chocolate lava cake.
It's a great alternative if you don't have ramekins.
And even if you do, you'll still want to give this a try.

HOW TO MAKE CHOCOLATE PUDDING CAKE
In a large mixing bowl, mix together flour, sugar, 1/4 cup of the cocoa, baking powder, and salt.
Stir in milk, oil and vanilla.
Pour into an ungreased baking dish.
Then mix together the remaining 1 cup of cocoa with the brown sugar in a separate bowl.
Sprinkle this mixture on top of the chocolate cake batter.
Next, pour very hot tap water on top. DO NOT STIR!! Place in the oven to bake.
The pudding mixture will sometimes boil up out of the pan a little as it's baking. So I like to place it on a baking sheet to bake to catch any spills.
Let cool for about half an hour and the chocolate liquid at the bottom of the pan will thicken into a hot fudge sauce consistency.
(If you don't let it cool, it will be very runny.)
Enjoy with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream!
