It makes a great handmade gift for a new baby.
STRIPED RAGTOP BABY BLANKET
Update 5-19-25: This blanket tutorial was one of my very first blog posts way back in 2011. The tutorial is the same. Formatting has been updated slightly.
I know the ragtop quilt has been around awhile.
It's a fun easy project.
Well, here's how to make it even easier and faster
SUPPLIES NEEDED FOR A RAG BLANKET
- 1 yard each of three coordinating colors of flannel
- thread
- sewing machine
- sharp scissors
HOW TO MAKE A RAG BLANKET FOR BABY
First, you need to cut your fabric into 7" X 36" strips.
The best way to do this is to refold your fabric. It comes off the bolt like this:
Open it up and fold it the other way, like this:
At this point, cut it into 7" strips. Each strip will be 36" long.
You will need 4 strips of each of the three colors.
Now we start sewing. Each set of strips will be wrong sides together and with 1/2 inch seam allowance.
Grab two of your first fabric with wrong sides together, then place two pieces of your second fabric (wrong sides together) on top.
The top piece of the of the first set, and the bottom piece of the second set will end up being right sides together.
Sew along the long edge with 1/2 inch seam allowance.
Then flip over, place two pieces of your third fabric (wrong sides together) on top of your second fabric and sew.
Repeat until you have all six panels sewn together.
Trim off any uneven ends.
Then stitch around the entire blanket with a 1/2 inch seam allowance.
Then it's time to start cutting.
Cut vertically along each seam, about 1/4 to 1/2 apart. Be careful not to cut through your stitching.
Next, wash and dry.
When it comes out of the dryer, you'll have your ragtop blanket.
Finished blanket is approx. 36" X 36".
This project only took me about an hour and ten minutes. (That does include being distracted because of my kids, but not washing and drying time)
