Make a star quilt block using 5 inch squares!
I created this fun quilt block because I wanted a simple nine patch quilt block with a star pattern in the center.
The construction is pretty easy and you can utilize a charm pack.
I created a baby quilt using this quilt block. If there is enough interest, I will write up the pattern.
Another star quilt block option is the sawtooth star.

FABRIC REQUIREMENTS FOR A STAR BLOCK
To make a star block you will need two different sizes of squares in contrasting colors. For example, I wanted my stars to be yellow. For the background pieces, I used a variety of printed fabrics.I wanted to utilize a charm pack, so the quilt block I made ended up being 13 1/2 inches.
Below I have listed the cutting measurements for 4 different quilt block sizes.
Tip: It is easier if you do NOT use a directional fabric like I did for the stars.
Cutting measurements for 6 inch block:
- 8 squares 2 1/2 inches (various colors)
- 1 square 2 1/2 inches (star)
- 8 squares 1 1/2 inches (star)
Cutting measurements for 9 inch block:
- 8 squares 3 1/2 inches (various colors)
- 1 square 3 1/2 inches (star)
- 8 squares 2 inches (star)
Cutting measurements for 12 inch block:
- 8 squares 4 1/2 inches (various colors)
- 1 square 4 1/2 inches (star)
- 8 squares 2 1/2 inches (star)
Cutting measurements for 13.5 inch block: (Perfect for using charm packs)
- 8 squares 5 inches (various colors)
- 1 square 5 inches (star)
- 8 squares 2 3/4 inches (star)
HOW TO MAKE A NINE PATCH STAR BLOCK
For this tutorial, I will be making a 13 1/2 inch block. All measurements will reflect that. If you make a smaller block use the corresponding measurements listed above.I also made a video tutorial.
Begin by laying out your nine patch with nine 5" squares in three rows of three. In the very center make sure you place your star fabric, for my block the star is going to be yellow.
You will need to add star points to each square that touches the center block. To do this take a 2 3/4" square of yellow fabric. Draw a diagonal line from one corner to the opposite corner.
With right sides together, place the smaller square on the larger square lining up the corners. The line should be placed so the ends of the line are towards the edges of the larger block, not pointing to the corner.
Sew along the line. Trim the edge 1/4 inch from the seam. Press.
Create another star point by repeating the same process on an adjacent side.
Make 4 blocks in this manner.
Lay out your nine patch and sew together each row. Then sew the rows together. Use a 1/4 inch seam allowance to sew them together.
