The courthouse steps quilt block is a variation of the log cabin block.
Fabric strips are added in pairs on opposite sides of the center "door" to create the visual of steps.I love a classic quilt block, and this one is easy to make.
COURTHOUSE STEPS QUILT BLOCK TUTORIAL
The courthouse steps block begins at the center with a square "door".Pairs of fabric strips are sewn to each side of the block, alternating from top and bottom to left and right.
Constructing the block from the center and moving outward makes this block unique in its construction.
Fabric info: I'm using the Perfect Union fabric line from Edita Sitar by Laundry Basket Quilts.
Its variety of blues and creams makes it perfect for the two-tone color palette of the block.
(A few other blocks I've made with this fabric are the Celtic twist block, the Indiana puzzle block, the square in a square, and the economy block.)

HOW TO MAKE A COURTHOUSE STEPS QUILT BLOCK
This is an easy block, but it requires precision. There are three vital aspects to creating the perfect block.- Cut the pieces accurately.
- Use exactly 1/4 inch seam allowance.
- Press the seams outward after each pair of strips is sewn onto the block.
Tip: Layout the block pieces to easily keep track of the order to sew in.
With right sides together, sew a B piece to one side of the square.
Sew the other B piece to the opposite side of the square.
Press the seam outward.
Step 2: The C pieces should be the same length as the long side of the newly formed unit. Sew the C pieces to the left and right of the unit formed in step 1. Press the seams outward.
Step 3: Sew the D pieces to the top and bottom of the unit formed in step 2. Press the seams outward.
Step 4: Sew the E pieces to the left and right of the unit. Press the seams outward.
Step 5: Sew the F pieces to the top and bottom of the unit. Press the seams outward.
Step 6: Sew the G pieces to the left and right of the unit. Press the seams outward.
