HOMEMADE GARLIC KNOTS

This time of year, I love baking. Especially rolls and bread sticks. There's nothing better than a fresh hot roll with your dinner.

At our house we like a lot of Italian foods like spaghetti, shrimp linguine, lasagna and ravioli.

And we always have some kind of roll or bread stick as a side. These buttery garlic knots are one of my favorites.

These easy garlic knots are soft and chewy. The butter topping is so flavorful and tasty.

INGREDIENTS FOR GARLIC KNOTS

  • water
  • honey
  • active dry yeast
  • olive oil
  • bread flour
  • sea salt
  • salted butter
  • Parmesan cheese
  • parsley
  • garlic salt

Note:
I always use bread flour when making rolls, breadsticks or bread. It gives it a nice chewy texture. If you don't have bread flour on hand, all purpose flour will work too.

HOW TO MAKE SOFT GARLIC KNOTS

Making homemade breads and rolls can be a little bit intimidating if you've never done made a yeast dough before.
But don't worry, this is an easy recipe to get started with. And I'll walk you through each step. Let's get started with the yeast.
proofing yeast
Begin by combining the warm water, honey and yeast. Let it sit for 5 minutes or so. The yeast will dissolve and expand.

You want the water to be "baby bottle warm". If it's too hot, it will kill the yeast. If it's not warm enough, then it will take much longer to rise.

ingredients in a bowl

In a stand mixer, add 3 1/2 cups of flour, oil, salt and yeast mixture. Mix with the dough hook attachment until the flour is incorporated.

Add additional flour gradually until the dough mixture forms a ball. Knead for 5 minutes.

Cover the homemade dough and set it in a warm place to let the dough rise until double in size. This will take about an hour.

forming knots from dough
Form the knots on a lightly floured surface. OR you can spray the work surface with cooking spray. This prevents sticking as well as too much flour being added into the rolls.

Divide the dough into 12 equal pieces. Take a piece of dough and roll it into a long rope. Then tie the rope into a knot.

Place the knots on a greased baking sheet and bake at 400 for 12 minutes.
While they are in the oven, prepare the delicious garlic butter by melting the butter  in a small bowl. Then add the parmesan cheese, parsley and garlic salt.

Pull the garlic knots from the oven after 12 minutes. Spread the buttery goodness on the rolls with a pastry brush.

Bake an additional 2-5 minutes, or until golden brown.

Enjoy these delicious homemade garlic knots with soup or pasta or dip them in marinara sauce or pizza sauce.

If you happen to have any leftovers, store them at room temperature in an airtight container.
They also freeze well, just toss them in a zip top bag and freeze for up to 2 months. Thaw at room temperature for a few hours. You can warm them in the oven for a few minutes when ready to serve.

Variation:

You can use real minced garlic (instead of garlic salt) and Italian seasoning for a more intense flavor.
