This summer my sister had her first baby. I made her some receiving blankets. These receiving blankets are so easy, that I just had to share.

I loved swaddling my little ones when they were small. However, my babies were large to begin with and soon grew out of the little receiving blankets that I had. I decided to fix that problem with these receiving blankets.

How to Make an Easy Baby Receiving Blanket

Starting with a full yard of fabric ensures that these blankets will last much longer than the standard store bought receiving blanket. It's a good thing I made them large because my new nephew started out at a whopping 9 lbs 10 oz. Written and video instructions are below.

Supplies for Receiving Blanket

1 yard of flannel fabric
surger
thread
scissors

Note from a reader: "I made a lot of flannel blankets for my grandson. I made them square and the width of the fabric, so about 42 inches." - Karen

If you want to make a square blanket, you will need about 1 1/4 yard and then cut it to square.

Steps for a DIY Receiving Blanket

Begin with 1 yard of fabric
At each corner, use a large round object (like a bowl) to draw a curve. This will be your guide as you serge around the corners.
Serge. As you go, make sure you surge off the unwanted branding on the edges and use the line you drew as a guide to round the corners.

That's it! It really is a quick project. I whipped up three of them in no time.
