Brownies with White Frosting

Decadent brownies slathered with creamy white frosting and topped with a thin chocolate glaze. Can it get any better?! I don't think so.

These brownies were a staple growing up. I've made a few modifications .... see that white frosting? No offense to Mama, but this frosting is SO much better. It's creamy and delicate and not overly sweet.  The chocolate glaze has also been revised slightly. Here's to updating old childhood classics.

I've actually shared the base for this brownie before. It's my Grandma's recipe and it's amazing. Just one bowl and simple ingredients that I always have on hand.

The vanilla frosting for these brownies is more time consuming, but is also made with everyday ingredients.

The chocolate glaze calls for semi-sweet baking chocolate, which I do not always keep on hand, but I think I'm gonna start!

Ingredients Needed for Brownies

  • butter
  • eggs
  • sugar
  • flour
  • salt
  • cocoa
  • vanilla extract
  • nuts, optional

Ingredients For White Frosting and Glaze

  • milk
  • flour
  • butter
  • sugar (granulated, not powdered sugar)
  • vanilla
  • melted butter
  • semi-sweet baking chocolate

Tips for Making Brownies with White Frosting


  • Do not overbake the brownies - for moist fudgy brownies, they should be slightly underbaked
  • Cool brownies completely before frosting
  • You can make the frosting ahead of time
  • It's best to wait until the chocolate glaze cools before cutting

How to Store Brownies


Brownies can be stored at room temperature. They should be kept in an airtight container. I usually just cover the pan of brownies with some plastic wrap.

Decadent fudgy homemade brownies, slathered with a creamy white frosting and topped with a thin layer of chocolate glaze. YUM!

ingredients:

Brownies:
  • 1 c. butter
  • 4 eggs
  • 2 c. sugar
  • 1 1/2 c. flour
  • 1 t. salt
  • 1/2 c. cocoa
  • 2 t. vanilla
  • 1 c. nuts, optional
White Frosting:
  • 1/2 c. milk
  • 2 1/2 T. flour
  • 1/2 c. butter
  • 1/2 c. plus 2 T. sugar (granulated, not powdered)
  • 1 t. vanilla
Chocolate Glaze:
  • 2 T. butter
  • 2 ounces semi-sweet baking chocolate

How to cook Brownies with White Frosting

Brownies
  1. Melt butter in a mixing bowl in the microwave.
  2. Stir in eggs and sugar.
  3. Add flour, salt, cocoa, vanilla and nuts, if desired. Stir just until combined.
  4. Spread in a greased 9 X 13 pan.
  5. Bake at 350 for 25 minutes. Do not overbake or brownies will be dry.
  6. Cool completely.
White Frosting
  1. Mix together milk and flour. Over medium heat, cook until mixture becomes thick and pasty.
  2. Cool completely.
  3. In a stand mixer, mix butter and sugar on high speed for 3 minutes, scraping sides of bowl as necessary.
  4. Add flour/milk mixture and vanilla. Beat until sugar granules have dissolved completely. (Taste some to see - if you can feel the sugar granules on your tongue, keep mixing)
Chocolate Glaze
  1. Instructions for Chocolate Glaze
  2. Melt butter and chocolate in the microwave. Stir until smooth and combined.
Assembling the Brownies:
  1. Spread the white frosting on completely cooled brownies. Drizzle the chocolate glaze on top and then tip the pan in different directions until the glaze has coated the entire top of the brownies. Wait to cut the brownies until the glaze has cooled.

    1. Yes! Just add a few drops of food coloring in the desired color. You could also add flavoring (like mint) if desired.
