Easy Quilt Blocks That Look Difficult

Looking for easy quilt blocks that look difficult? Want to impress people with your quilting skills even though you're just a beginner?

You've come to the right place. I've gathered up a bunch of EASY quilt blocks that only look complicated.

The best part? They're all free patterns or tutorials!

EASY QUILT BLOCKS THAT LOOK DIFFICULT

One of the things I've come to love about quilting is being able to take fabric, cut it up in specific ways and when you sew it all together it is unique and beautiful.

10 + EASY QUILT BLOCKS THAT LOOK HARD

Let's get to it! If you know of an easy quilt block that you'd like to add to the list, please let me know!

CELTIC TWIST BLOCK

Celtic twist quilt block

This Celtic twist quilt block looks so cool. The strips look as if they're twisted around each other. Making a whole quilt with this block would be stunning.

SEESAW QUILT BLOCK

This seesaw block looks so complicated, but is really quite simple. You can see there's a pinwheel in the center with flying geese at the outer edges and it just looks hard to make.

At first glance it really does look complicated. However, looking closer you can tell that's it's a variation of a four patch. The whole block is made up of just squares and rectangles pieces.

Be sure to check out the tutorial - Elaine walks you through the whole thing step-by-step.

TWISTED PINWHEEL

I love this variation of the pinwheel. This "twisted" version of a pinwheel looks complex, but it starts out with squares and strips.

Cut the pieces in the prescribed manner and sew them back together to create this fun pinwheel. Find the full tutorial at Sew in Love

DISAPPEARING PINWHEEL BLOCK

This is one of my favorite simple blocks I've come across. It begins with a straight forward pinwheel block. It is then cut into 9 pieces. The pieces are re-arranged to create an entirely new pattern.

LADY OF THE LAKE QUILT BLOCK

The lady of the lake quilt block is a fun block that is made entirely of half square triangles. The contrasting colors make a statement, but the block is great for beginners.  I just love these blue fabrics!

Find the printable pattern at Fat Quarter Shop.

LISA'S STAR BLOCK

Lisa's Star Block
This pretty star caught my eye. Those itty bitty triangles seem like they'd be so hard. But they're just a combination of half square triangles and flying geese.

Find the free pattern at Lisa Bongean.

NORDIC STAR

nordic star

I'm loving this red and white Nordic Star. It's pieced together with HST's and strips. It is simple to make, but looks so intricate.

Julie has the measurements to make a mini one or a larger one, so go check out her article for the free tutorial.

RIBBON STAR QUILT BLOCK

ribbon star
Doesn't this block look so neat? It's like ribbons are woven right through it.

It's made from a simple nine-patch, strips and squares. You can totally make this with the help of Fabric406's tutorial.

LABYRINTH QUILT BLOCK

labyrinth block
Another woven type block. Can you believe it's made with just half square triangles and squares!

The ultimate beginner's block that will wow everyone!

Find the instructions to the labyrinth block at My Patch World.

OMBRE HEART BLOCK

ombre heart bock

Isn't this heart block just adorable? I'm loving the simplicity.

Head over to The Crafty Quilter for all the details.

SUNFLOWER QUILT BLOCK

All those points make this sunflower block seem so hard.

But as you look more closely, you can see that it's mostly different sizes of half square triangles.

Find the full tutorial at Fabric406

HERRINGBONE QUILT PATTERN

This next one is not a quilt block, but rather a whole quilt pattern.

It looks like it would be hard, but is really quite simple.

This herringbone quilt is my latest tutorial. It uses 2 1/2 inch strips to simplify the cutting process.
